Not as sophisticated or as deadly as the jumping mines that had become common, this type of mine had the advantage of being a lot cheaper to make and was a lot harder to detect. The name penaali, meaning pen box, was quickly applied to these types of mines since they closely resembled the boxes commonly used for storing pens in Finland. When the lid is pressed down it dislodges a pin in the fuse and allows the firing pin to hit the detonator. It consists of a wooden box with a hinged lid that contains a small explosive charge. The Laatikkomiina M/43 is very similar to the earlier German Schützenmine 42 and especially the Soviet PMD-6.
